About the joint research

Joint research is a system whereby researchers from our university and researchers from other universities or private companies work on common research topics based on a contract, aiming to produce excellent research results. The goal is to discuss the direction of the research, investigate related research, develop technology, and conduct verification experiments, and then publish the results of the research in academic journals and international conferences. Please see below for specific contract procedures and fees.

Commissioned research is a system in which our university is commissioned by a company or other organization, our researchers conduct research at the expense of the client, and report the results to the client. The difference from collaborative research is that our laboratory is responsible for all research activities. Please see below for specific contract procedures and various costs.

Since there are individual differences in the shape of teeth and jaws, tooth alignment, defects, treatment marks, etc., dental X-rays are also widely used for identifying bodies in accidents and disasters. Until now, experts have identified bodies by visually comparing dental X-ray images, but this is prone to subjective judgment, so an objective and efficient method is required.

In this study, we developed a system that uses a convolutional neural network (CNN) to identify individuals from dental X-ray images. CNNs can automatically extract features to identify individuals from images, and are also expected to discover new features that are difficult for humans to find. However, a large amount of data is required to train a high-performance model, and it is difficult to obtain many dental images, so this study incorporates few-shot learning, which enables high-precision learning even with a small amount of data.

In the fishing industry, there is a need to locate schools of fish in real time. Therefore, we developed a model to detect objects such as schools of fish and seabirds from aerial images taken by drones.

In addition, resource surveys require accurate identification of catches and the digitization of information. Therefore, we developed an image recognition model that automatically identifies fish species and body length from images taken during the selection of catches. In this commissioned project, we carried out everything from model development to evaluation, and demonstrated that the model has sufficient performance for practical use.

The industrial parts manufacturing industry handles many blueprints, but design requires a lot of manual work. Meanwhile, companies have accumulated huge amounts of design data from the past, and new designs are often created while referring to past drawings.

Therefore, we developed a system that automatically searches for the part with the most similar shape among past drawings from the drawing data of a new design.By applying deep learning, we developed a method that can perform searches to a certain extent even when the query image contains noise.

Development of a personal authentication system using dental X-ray images and deep learning

In this research, we are developing a system that uses deep learning to identify individuals from dental X-ray images. Because conventional visual identification is prone to subjective judgment, more objective and efficient methods are required.

By utilizing deep learning, we can automatically extract features such as the shape of teeth and jaws, teeth alignment, and treatment marks, and adopt few-shot learning that can learn even with a small amount of data. We also aim to achieve highly accurate personal authentication by combining CT data after death with X-ray images taken during life.
